Mental and Emotional Health with a Spiritual Connection #1
Balanced self-care movement

…Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind… (Romans 12:2). This week’s Blog will focus on your mental and emotional health.

Your mind is the control center of your total being and thus all the other areas of your life. If balanced self-care is to be a serious goal, it all starts in your mind. Romans 8:6 says: “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.” Those of us who are children of God asks the Holy Spirit to help us seek the mind of Christ. By the same token, however, we must do diligence on our part of preventing problem situations and we must be responsive and responsible when problem issues arise.

I don’t know a single person who don’t get stressed or have emotional upsets which is a part of normal living. The time to be concerned is when the emotional upset or stressing situation is all the time or goes on for weeks, or months or even longer and it is keeping you from your regular, normal functioning.

Just as we seek professional help when we have a physical problem that is keeping us from our normal daily functions, we must seek help when emotional or mental functioning becomes a prolonged issue. Obviously, the magnitude of the situation must be taken into consideration. Whether it is major or minor, however, prayer is absolutely my first line of defense. If you are REALLY stressed out or REALLY having an emotional breakdown, never be afraid to seek professional help. For II Timothy 1:7 says: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” to make rational decisions about our health when necessary.

Life can sometimes present us with challenges that can be difficult to manage.

When you are emotionally upset or stressed out about something, you are likely not functioning at full capacity in other aspects of your life:
• Probably irritable and more likely to say something you might regret later;
• Not a good time to try making financial decisions;
• All of a sudden you don’t feel like going to the gym or your normal healthy diet seems boring and a little comfort food or junk food sounds like a great idea;
• Even praying might be a challenge at this time.

On the other hand, if your emotions are in a good place and you are in a good mental and emotional state of mind, your attitude is likely to be more positive; you are more likely to make rational financial decisions; you might even be encouraged to help someone else, thank the Lord for your having a wonderful moment, or even be inspired to go to the gym or at least be energized to do something that is physically healthy.

In other words, emotional upsets and stressful situations affect other areas of your life. Everything is connected. It all comes down to “balanced self-care.”

I close this Blog with the Scripture John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Be Blessed,
Joe Dear
