“About the author”

Dr. Joseph Dear is a counselor educator who wants to demystify or simplify the work of counselors for the general public as well as for counselors in training. He wants to share some of the “secrets” of counseling along with his forty years of professional experience so the reader can have a resource on how to live a healthy, balanced life and lifestyle, based on the latest research and best practices on the subject.

Dr. Dear is actually writing about how he tries to live and how he continues to work on improving the quality in his own life in each of the areas covered in this book. Following are comments on how the author works on all the areas covered in the book.

Physically he works hard at eating a nutritious diet daily and exercises at the gym at least three times a week. He is well known for his love of food. Fortunately he has acquired a great taste for healthy food and fine dining.

Mentally he works at staying mentally sharp by learning new things, staying ahead of his students at the university and staying away from stress, worry and negative people. His 2-hour workout at the gym also helps with his mental stability.

Spiritually he is a devoted Christian who lives his faith; follows the voice of the Holy Spirit and stays in prayer for direction to combat the challenges of this world.

Family life is a continuous challenge to keep family members’ cares and concerns ahead of his own. If there were one area that proves to be his greatest challenge, it would be here where he has sought counseling and continue to strive to do better.

Professionally/educationally he continues to teach in the counselor education department at the university in spite of his retiring several years ago from the California Credentialing Commission.

Following his passion, purpose and vision is the work he has been doing through his involvement with his profession, his church and community organizations and now, finally through his writings.

Financially, he is comfortably solvent, living frugally and investing wisely.

Civically he continues to be involved at all levels locally at his church and in his local community and nationally; he has served on numerous local, state and national boards of directors and his Christian and professional involvements keep him busy.

Socially he has continued to be active with his men’s group for decades; his professional organization has become a social and professional outlet for many activities; but mostly he socializes with his Christian brothers and sisters.

Personally he is always finding something new to learn especially with the many new electronic gadgets that continue to capture his personal interest.

Action is one of his two favorite chapters, this is the one that he revisits on a regular basis which keeps reminding him to “just do it,” when he is caught vacillating with simple decisions.

Organization is something that he has learned over the years to keep everything in its designated place whenever possible.

Time is another one of those issues that he has to continue reminding himself to not take on more than he can handle, to keep those daily “to do” lists prioritized and stay focused.

Excellence – for most of his life he has almost always sought after excellence in whatever he does. His motto has always been, you get what you pay for and you get out of what you put into.

Self assessment – if you don’t know from where you are starting, you won’t know whether you have progressed or not. He self assesses on a fairly regular basis, oftentimes by looking at old “to do” lists.

Change – this is probably his most challenging component. He like many others who get caught up with keeping the same routine. Sometimes he has to set himself up to be forced to change, and then other times he has to wait until he is ready for the change.

Commitment – His philosophy is, if it is worth having or doing (or whatever), then it is worthy of having my commitment. And, if he commits to it, it is as good as being done.

Motivation – over the years, he has learned that having a positive attitude about most things and thinking positively is motivating, especially if you have had a number of successful results as a result of thinking that way.

Decision making – through continuous practice with a number of different processes, he has learned to do the best you can with your first process, learn from your mistakes and make needed adjustments where necessary.

Resilience – This is his other favorite chapter because it represents so much of his own life past, present and future. He is continuously working on building onto his protective factors and eliminating as many risk factors in his life as possible.

Problem solving – This is what he does best. It gets him into trouble sometimes at home, but otherwise he is energized by embracing different perspectives, learning from mistakes and keeping a positive attitude about solving problems.

Support – he is the first to admit that we can’t always do things by ourselves; we need help sometimes and vise versa, providing support to other people is the right thing to do.

Empowerment – he would like to think that he has been empowered by his lifestyle of paying forward the many opportunities he has been given, giving back to his community and his many years of life experiences both positive and not so positive.
